Do We All Just Wanna Be Rockstars?
Do We Really Wanna Be Big Rockstars?
Tertullian asked the famous question, “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?” In other words, what does secular culture have to do with Christian culture? The short answer is that all truth is God’s truth, and the answers to some of this life’s toughest questions can be found in the lyrics of today’s most infectious rock anthems. At the very least and maybe without even knowing it, the lyrics to these songs point us toward truth… they really are pop-culture parables.
Mix Tape continued this week with “Rockstar” by Nickelback. This was probably the most “provocative” sermon of the series, but if there is a rock anthem of the summer of 2007… Rockstar is it, so we felt it was important to include it.
There’s probably something in the song that appeals to just about everyone on the planet, whether it’s “dating a centerfold who loves to blow my money for me,” or “living in hilltop houses” and “driving fifteen cars.” But God views fame much differently than humanity does. Michael challenged the Emmaus community to:
1) Always remember that God is sovereign, that he “rules and reigns over the kingdoms of men, that he gives them to anyone he wishes, and that he chooses people who aren’t proud.” You don’t have to worry about promoting yourself because God raises the humble to a place of dignity, honor and happiness.
2) Consider your motives. If you’re living for fame, glory or popularity… you’ll get your reward here and now, but that’s all you’ll get. Followers of Jesus should live life in light of the Kingdom of God and with eternity always in mind. “Only one life, so soon it will pass, only what’s done for Christ will last.”
“All people are like grass, and their glory like the flowers of the field. The grass dies and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord will live forever.” – 1 Peter 1:24-25

wow michael. this really grabbed my attention. i think everytime that i have heard this song on the radio i have been disgusted by it…but to see the video was just too real. it is so true that inside each of us is just a little of this attitude. just reading this has made me want to pray for purity and “God-thinking” in the way that i live today… i want to live for His fame…not mine.
I know, right?!? We closed the message with the song “It’s All About You.” It goes like this:
It’s all about you, Jesus
And all this is for you
For your glory and your fame
It’s not about me
As if you should do things my way
You alone are God, and I surrender
Really great service today!
I’m confused. . .Women, Playboy Bunnies, Girls in bathtubs, but you bleep out “drug dealer”?
I wouldn’t have bleeped anything out… you can thank YouTube for that! Lol…
