Truth
Truth (Text)
The Bible is a difficult book. In order to live it out and not just talk about it, someone somewhere has to make decisions about it. Someone has to decide what it actually means to put flesh and blood in its commands. It has to be interpreted, and if it isn’t interpreted then it can’t be lived out. We believe Jesus expects us to be engaged in the endless process of deciding what it means to actually live out the text, the Bible.
We believe this process requires a great deal of conviction and humility, and we’re absolutely admitting that we may not “nail” it correctly the first time. (Or the 2nd or 3rd time for that matter.) When the first Christians engaged in this process in Acts 15, they said the strangest thing, “It seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us.” They are making a monumental decision and the best they can come up with is that this “seems” like the right thing to do. They don’t claim to have an absolute word from God, at best they claim guidance from the Spirit of God. At Emmaus, we’re endeavoring to do the same, to rely on the Spirit of God to lead us and guide us as we wrestle with the complexities of the Bible and what it means to embody the Gospel.
We believe that the message of Jesus impacts every area of a person’s life and culture and he is redeeming all of creation. We believe we are “saved” by seeking out redemption in the Biblical text and then doing our best to live out that redemption in everyday life.
